With the sun never really going down being here feels like living in a long day with many little naps along the way. Nuunu took leave from work to be able to host the Kaffemik but today she had to be back on her post. She is a teacher at one of the schools in town and even though it is summer holiday she has to go in to do some of the administrative jobs. After a very leisurely breakfast she trotted down the hill to be at her office at 9am. Aqqaluk did some of the household chores, like hanging out the clean washing, and then we went to his office where I spent a happy few hours on the internet. Somewhere in the bright afternoon we went home for lunch, and then we all had a nap. We had dinner after 9pm and then we went for a walk. On returning we sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee and eating cake until long after 1pm.
During all the times of sitting we had the most interesting discussions. Both Aqqaluk and Nuunu speak English well, and I was thankful to be able to ask them all the questions about Greenland and the people here that have been building up since I arrived here. They have a deep awareness of the past and present strengths and challenges faced by their people. Aqqaluk had been to Canada and Alaska and has a wide understanding of issues faced by the Inuit around the Arctic. We also spent many hours contemplating similarities between the cultures here and in South Africa and issues that arise in the process of development and globalisation. I really feel that there is a something that the Lord is preparing in the Inuit that will bless the whole world but especially places like Africa who are facing many of the same problems.
