Western Highway: 18 days to go!

The 7 Highways is a prayer project that aims to pray along the physical highways from the “Ends of the Earth” to Jerusalem for God’s Highway to be made known to all creation (John 14: 6 & Mar16:15) and for the sons of God to be revealed (Romans 8:19). Three of the seven journeys have been completed including the Southern Highway in 2005 and the Northern Highway Parts I and II in 2008.

On 17 July 2009 the Western Highway Part I will start at the furthest westernmost tip of the North American continent at Wales in Alaska. From there the journey will go along the Western Coast of North, Central and South America to Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of the South American continent. In November and December 2009 the Western Highway Part II will cover the stretch from Spain and Portugal along the North Coast of Africa to Jerusalem.

The team for the Western Highway Part I initially comprises of Cecilia, Rene and Jansie (Johanna) who will start in Alaska and travel together to the Mexican border. At the border between the US and Mexico Cecelia and Rene will say goodbye to Jansie. From there Cecilia will return home to New Jersey and Rene may go with Cecilia or visit some other friends in US. Jansie will travel by bus to Mexico City where she will meet Eugenie. From there they will travel through Central America to Costa Rica from where they will fly to Venezuela via Panama. Ethie will join Jansie and Eugenie in Caracas, Venezuela and the three will travel together from there to Lima, Peru. From Lima Eugenie will return to South Africa while Ethie and Jansie continue to the southern tip of South America from where they will go to Buenos Aires and then back to South Africa.

Praise reports and prayer requests:

Finances: Since our previous prayer request via email our basic budget seems to be covered. All our flight tickets are bought. Some uncertainties about the actual cost of land travel in Central and South America makes it hard to draw up a budget. Please continue to pray that the Lord will provide what He knows we will need in the way He sees fit to do so.

Visas: Jansie and Rene got their Canada visas, Cecilia’s is still process. Jansie and Eugenie have their visas for Mexico, praise the Lord! Panama initially proved to be a mountain too high since they need more than 6 weeks to process visas and we only had three weeks left. But then the Lord opened a door for us to set our feet on Panama soil when we got transit visas to fly via Panama to Venezuela. (Please pray for Panama! They are the only country south of Mexico that requires visas from South Africans. They charged us $50 per person for a transit visa that would allow us to set our feet on the Airport for one hour. They are the gatekeepers between the North and South American Continents as well as the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans and things around these gates seem to be complicated! )

Overland transport: Our questions on overland travel in North and Central America are mostly answered, but we still need the Plan and much of the information about our journey from Venezuela southward. Since much of our contact with the people of the different countries are made on the busses we share with them we, we need to be on the right bus at the right time. Please pray that the Lord would show us His route and transport for us.

Contact with local believers: Praise the Lord we have contact with believers in 5 out of the 7 places we will stop in the USA, including Wales! We still have no actual contacts in any of the three towns we stop at in Canada, although a few Canadians have responded to say they will help us look for believers there. In Central and South America we also have no clear contacts yet and we are asking the Lord if He wants us to be more covert there? Please pray that the Lord would open all the doors He wants opened, and give us and His body in these nations the Wisdom and Grace to know and do His will in every contact we seek and make.

Protection: Cecilia’s Father was hospitalised with a possible obstruction in his digestive tract, but was discharged after a miraculous turnaround and is fit to fly to the States in the 4^th of July. Cecilia’s parents will take care of her children in the time that she is travelling. If her father is not healthy enough, Cecilia will not be able to join us on the Highway. Please continue to pray for his complete restoration. Please continue to pray for the protection of the whole team and their families.

Father, You are the creator of all things. You called forth the planets with a word, and established the stars with the sound of your voice. You have authority over all the resources of the universe, and you have promised to meet all of our needs.
I bring Cecilia, Rene, Jansie before your throne of provision right now. You knowt the needs, and the challenges that face them.. Lord, I ask that you would release a mighty blessing upon them and demonstrate your enormous generosity, by providing above and beyond all that they could hope or imagine right now. Guard their hearts from anxiety and fear. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit and cause faith to rise up within them. Enable them to stand firm in the midst of uncertainty, and bring forth a mighty victory. Establish for Yourself Lord, another testimony of your goodness, that those who hear of it might glorify Your name. I pray in Jesus mighty name, Amen!

38 days and counting to Wales, Alaska

Today in 38 days Cecilia, Rene and I will start the Western Highway Part one by praying at the furthest westernmost tip of the North American continent at Wales in Alaska. From there we will travel over land all the way along the Western Coast of North America. At the border between the US and Mexico Cecelia and Rene will leave me and Eugenie will meet me. From there she and I will travel through Central America to Costa Rica or Panama where Ethie will join us. Eugenie will leave us again in Peru and Ethie and I will continue to the southern tip of South America from where we will go to Buenos Aires and then back to South Africa.

Between now and the 12^th of July when Rene and I will travel to New York to meet Cecilia the following things to come in place:

Finances: Full provision of all the money we need to be able to get to where we need to go. Rene is still waiting for all her money, Ethie and Eugenie has much in place already, but they need some more, Jansie and Cecilia are OK if the budget we were able do is accurate.

Flight tickets: Rene still needs her ticket to the US, and Eugenie needs hers to Mexico. Jansie, Cecilia and Rene have tickets from New York to Nome, Alaska but have not yet been able to book the flight from Nome to Wales due to difficulty in communicating with Bering Air, the only airline that seems to fly there.

Overland transport: We need to travel by bus from Alaska to Canada but we haven’t been able to find clear info on bus services there. Our plan is to rent a car from the US Canada border to San Diego, so that part is sorted although it is far to drive. In Mexico, Central and South America we need busses and ferries and THE ABILITY TO SPEAK SPANISH!

Visas: Jansie, Cecilia and Rene still need their Canada visas. Jansie and Eugenie need visas for Mexico, and Jansie, Eugenie and Ethie need visas for Panama.

Contact with local believers: Jansie desperately waits on the Lord for His power to make contact with the people He wants us to meet along the way. She has had many favorable responses and needs the anointing of the Holy Spirit to join the dots and fill the blanks.

Awesome God! Rene won an international art competition for her painting “He is my Rock - He is my Fortress” and Cecilia and her family got supernatural favor with their US residence permits.

Protection: Eugenie’s cat and dog got sick, Jansie’s dog was hurt, Rene’s bank account was emptied out through internet fraud, and Ethie’s car broke.

Please pray with us for these things and let us know if the Lord gives you anything for us!

Today you will be with Me in paradise… (Luk 23:34)

After the Southern Highway through Africa, as we were preparing for the first part of the Northern Highway, some-one suggested that I look at the seven things Jesus said on the cross before he died and see if there might be some correlation with the character of the different highways.

In the Gospels of Matthew and Mark Jesus is quoted only as saying: “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Mat 27:46 & Mar 15:34) For me there was a clear parallel between these words and what we witnessed on the two journeys through Africa. In many places we felt that Africa was echoing this very call as it was groaning under the curse of corruption, poverty and disease.

The Northern Highway Part One similarly bore a lot of relation to the first cross word of Jesus in Luke 23:34: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” This was personified in the fateful encounter with the biting lemming at the northern tip of Europe, and the theme could be traced al the way to the corrupt Russian border officials and the cheating Turkish hotel mongers.

The second part of the Northern Highway starting from Greenland was characterized by relationship and the unity of the body of Christ. This reminded a lot of when Jesus told Mary and John that they were to regard one another as son and mother (John 19:26-27).

On praying about the Western Highway I felt the cross word for the Americas is found in Luke 23:43 where Jesus tells the criminal that is crucified with Him: “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Again this word forms a central theme in the mandate for this specific Highway. In this word Jesus essentially told the Good News to the sinner who was about to die with Him: “today I am becoming the Way for you to go to the Father with Me”. As has been the mandate for the Northern Highway Part 2, where I told the Gospel to all creation at the Ends of the Earth in the North, the Good News about the Highway that is Jesus has to be told to the Western End of the Earth. Based on this I feel led to read at least the Gospel of John aloud in every country and territory, and to read other parts of the New Testament as the opportunity arises. I also feel this might be the most evangelistic highway so far, and that we should be open to share the good news with people we meet along the way.
