Day 6 Prince George to Vancouver (22 Julie)

(Written at the Olsen’s in Portland, Oregon on 24 July)

Breakfast at Laura’s B&B is something like I’ve never seen anywhere before. She gave us a menu and asked us to make our selection in the evening, and then proceeded to produce culinary works of art that left us very satisfied.

After breakfast she drove us to the bus station on her way to work, and showed us various things along the way, like her church and the various neighborhoods. She also explained that all the dead pine trees we were seeing (we also noticed them along the way from Whitehorse the day before) had died of the pine beetle. The pine beetle seem to be taking over because they haven’t had a cold enough winter to kill them in the last 10 years.

The bus to Vancouver passed through the by now familiar scenery of lakes, forests and farmer’s fields. In the afternoon we entered a very reap and spectacular valley, almost like a canyon, and for more than 2 hours the road followed the river side showing us the most beautifull vistas.

Cecilia met a young man called Kevin on the bus. He was from Vancouver and had grandparents who were pastors, but he was not quite sure what he believed. She shared with him about the Lord, and when we arrived in Vancouver we asked him if it was ok for us to take a stone from his home town. He agreed and, to the great distress of the Greyhound staff, he found us a stone at the bus lot. Please pray for him that the Spirit would lead him to the Truth.

The Backpackers where we had booked the night was just around the corner from the station. Some of us had our darkest moments so far in the anticipation and reception of the night in the backpackers, but it turned out quite alright. We had our own little room, and we could enjoy a beautiful view of the Vancouver skyline from our window.

It was the annual fireworks night in Vancouver and we really tried to get to see some of this, but only saw the empty streets and restaurants on our way to the town centre. Then suddenly the roads where flooded with many thousands of people rushing from where the fireworks had been to where they would find their transport to go home. The city was filled with a young, almost carnival like atmosphere as we has dinner at a rooftop hamburger place. We did some soul-searching there till 1am, and then returned to the backpacker’s for a very short night’s rest.
