Good night in overnight bus from Talara to Lima. By accident booked the better seats in the bus, which were very nice! Arrived to smog covered Lima. Disembarked in an industrial part of town. Took a taxi to a hotel in the old center of Lima. Actually a 'pension', a sort of hostal run by two little old ladies on the 14, 15 and 16th floor of a 1930s apartment building. 14 floors makes no difference to the level of noice from the street! But we had a room for ourselves and the owners are very friendly and helpful (in Spanish).
Had a shower and then went souvenir shopping. A very pleasant experience! The craft market was (we believe) very reasonably priced and the vendors are not the least bit pushy. Altogether the most civilised souvenir shopping in recent memory.
In the afternoon has a 'tour' of Lima city center as we walked about 2km to the busstation for the international bus to Chile. Made it there but there were only 2 seats left for the Tuesday bus and they were not next to one another. Sitting apart for 54 hours was not inviting! Also. the timin g was poor as it would mean leaving Eugenie at 12:00 noon rather than being able to see hr off at the airport. Decided rather to talk a local bus to close to the border and journey bit by bit onwards from there.
Had a lovely walk through the pedestrain areas in the evening and good dinner at a restaurant. Lima is certainly prettier by night!
