(Written at Rosa and Monica´s house in Cartagena on 16 August)
We had a wonderful and very blessed day. After a leisurely wakeup and breakfast (toasted cheese & ham + Colombian coffee + fresh fruit juice) we visited the Siso family´s pastor. Pastor Sonia is an inspiring woman. Emmanuel translated for us and we were blessed with words and anointing and gifts. Thereafter we came home for a relaxed lunch (with more fresh fruit juice – basically pulped fruit with chopped ice, yum). In the afternoon we went to a beautiful beach on the Caribbean coast. On the way back we stopped at the bus station to buy our tickets for the following day. It was great to have Spanish speakers on our side to help with the interactions! Then we had a long tour of the city. With a population of 3 million it is quite big and has the standard city features of commercial and industrial areas that are less than beautiful. But the city seems safe (little razorwire or electric fencing to be seen, unlike Caracas and Maracaibo), with 2 modern centers with glitzy highrises (think the better parts of Sea Point in Cape Town - Cartagena is a holiday city, welcoming about 1 million tourists over December) and the most beautiful old town. It is a world heritage site and very well preserved Spanish colonial. Gabriel Garcia Marques and other famous people have houses there. Festive atmosphere as it is a long weekend so lots of local tourists around. The city tour had to be at night because if the intense heat (it was still 29 degrees at 20:00 but there was a nice sea breeze). We got home around 11:00 and after a fried plantain snack we were in bed past midnight.
The Siso family and Emmanuel really spared no trouble to make us comfortable and show us around and the really spoiled us. We all fell in love with them, their city and country and have an impression of Colombia as a country of refined and generous people overflowing with fresh fruit and all good things. We have been greatly blessed and encouraged. What a soothing balm after the harsh knocks of Venezuela!
