Ilulissat - Upernavik - Qaanaaq

I had to be at the airport at 7am so Kurt and Liz also brought the breakfast picknick and after checking in we had our meal in the hall. I was really quite sad to leave. I had become very fond of them and the unknown of Qaanaaq started to look quite daunting.

AirGreenland seems to fly most of their domestic flights in Dash 7s - small propeller craft that do not fly too high for one to have a great view of what is going on below. The Greenlandic cost is wery rugged. Its mostly mountains that seem to stand on the verge of jumping into the deap blue sea.

At the Upernavic airport we had to get out for refeuling. This was good, because at that airport Naja, the sister-in-law of Tukummeq in whose house I was invited to stay in Qaanaaq got on the flight at Upernavik. Julianne was also at the airport to see them off, and she was glad to meet me because I will be staying with them when I return to Upernavik.

On arrival in Qaanaaq we got out of the dash 7 onto a gravel runway and my heart almost stood still at the wastness of the desert wastland that was before me. Under almost black clouds the dark bay surrounded by high cliffs was so forreign to my eyes, and my mind struggled to take it all in.

All the passengers rushed into the little airport building that was already fulæl of the passengers waiting to depart again on this preacious once a week flight. Amid joyous greetings of many families we jostled for our luggage and I was introduced to Naja's family. Together we waited for their lift to return, and we took the little gravel road to town.
