29/7 – Day 8: Goodbye Upernavik

This morning I packed and finished the blog entries for Upernavik on Nuunu’s computer with the English spell check, before I ran down to Aqqaluk’s office to update the blog from Upernavik’s local radio station’s computer for one last time. While there Aqqaluk told me that his European ancestors were originally of Jewish decent. I told him that if he had told me this before I would have given him a much harder time in terms of making him listen to some explanations I should have liked to give him. As it turned out there was no time left for that now so the Lord will have to show him in His own time.

Nayara came to the station and we walked up the mountain to have lunch before I go to the airport. On arrival at their home we found Heldora there waiting to greet me. We all ate some of Miki’s birthday cake in his absence – his Kaffemik is tonight, I took a few last pictures of Heldora with the earrings and Nuunu with the oilskin jacket I had given her. I had to say goodbye to Aqqaluk there because he had to go back to the office, and then Heldora drove Nuunu, Nayara and me to the airport.

Heldora waited until I checked in and then she went to work saying she would be back before I fly. Nuunu and I found a nice spot on the side of the mountain near the airport and drank coffee she brought in a flask while we waited for my time to board. We had a good time discussing all the amazing things the Lord has done this week, and when we returned to the airport we found Aqqadu, Heldora’s husband waiting there for us. We sat in the almost hot sun until all the arriving passengers got their luggage and left the building. Then to our surprise they started boarding the flight almost 20 minutes early. We greeted in a hurry and I went through the gate, and when I looked back from the landing strip to where they would stand next to the building Heldora was back with them. I rushed back and kissed her through the fence, took a few more pictures of them on the other side of the fence and then I boarded. I could not see them from where I sat, but when the plane took off I could see Nuunu still standing there next to the airport building.

As I sit here now, my heart is paining. I think I’m really in love with Upernavik and its people. This whole 6 days there was such a blessing! I am so looking forward to see how the Lord will grow them.
